Born 2/27/43 in Sheffield, Alabama, grew up in neighboring town of Florence. Have also lived in rural Vermont, New York, Paris, London, San Diego, Hoboken, Berkeley, Santa Barbara, Richmond, and Chicago. Worked for the British Film Institute (1974-77), Chicago Reader (1987-2008), and FilmFactory (in Sarajevo (2013, 2014, 2015) and as a freelance writer and teacher (1966-74, 1977-1987, 2008 to the present).
