Jean Arthur, Joel McCrea, and Charles Coburn are all at their best in this charming romantic comedy (1943) in which they all wind up as roommates during the housing shortage in wartime Washington. The script is credited to several handsnot including Garson Kanin, who claims to have written most of itand the picture won Coburn a well-deserved Oscar; director George Stevens moves things along a lot more briskly than usual. Remade in 1966 as Cary Grant’s last picture, Walk, Don’t Run. 104 min. (JR)
