On Andrea Gronvall

Here’s the substance of two emails I recently sent to an obit writer at the Tribune:

She was also the best of phone chums. Not only do I already miss her; I still can’t accept that she’s gone.

Like the local filmmaker and teacher Peter Thompson (who didn’t even warrant an obit in either the Tribune or the Sun-Times) and (to a lesser extent, while he was still alive) Nelson Algren, Andrea was fiercely defended and deeply appreciated by those who knew her well and mostly ignored by everyone else, because she was never — ever — out on the market. She existed somewhere beyond those concerns, and will continue to exist and flourish for those who cherish that about her. [9/12/19]
