Opera Do Malandro

Ruy Guerra’s attempt to do a kind of version of The Threepenny Opera, set in Rio de Janeiro in the 40s and adapted from a play by singer-composer Chico Buarque (Bye Bye Brazil), is surprisingly slickvisually striking, but on the whole a disappointing effort from an important director. (JR)
