One of Elia Kazan’s weakest filmsconceivably his very worst, apart from The Sea of Grassthis 1953 anticommunist adventure about a circus troupe trying to escape from Czechoslovakia has a decent enough cast (Fredric March, Cameron Mitchell, Adolphe Menjou, Gloria Grahame, Terry Moore, and Richard Boone), which Kazan knows how to use effectively. But a pretty dated and uninteresting script by Robert Sherwood ultimately defeats their best efforts. (JR)
