Isabelle Huppert stars in Claude Chabrol’s 1991 version of the Gustave Flaubert novel, previously adapted by Jean Renoir (1934) and Vincente Minnelli (1949). Chabrol claims to have opted for an overall faithfulness in terms of dialogue and details, and, on the face of it, Jean Yanne as Monsieur Homais seems inspired casting. With Jean-Francois Balmer (Charles Bovary) and Christopher Malavoy (Rodolphe). (JR)
